Journeys of Grace

finding God's grace in my life every day
What Are You Waiting For?

What Are You Waiting For?

What are you waiting for?

Are you waiting for a relationship? Are you waiting for a degree? Are you waiting for healing from a long sickness? Are you waiting for wisdom about a decision?

What are you waiting for?

We wait because something we expect isn’t here yet. We wait because something we really want hasn’t been given to us yet. We wait because surely God has something better in mind for us than our current circumstances.

Friend, can I share something that God has been teaching me?

God has not made a mistake with your circumstances. You are right where He wants you to be.

Waiting is not wrong. God often places His children in seasons that we might describe as “waiting.” He does this for our good and His glory. But so often our focus is on the situation, on the things that we think we are waiting for, instead of where it really needs to be.

Because, you see, we don’t wait for temporal things. We wait for God.

“Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!” ~ Psalm 27:14

“Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.” ~ Psalm 25:5

“O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.” ~ Psalm 5:3

God will not withhold His best from you, but that doesn’t mean that His best and your desires are always on the same page. Realize that it may not be in God’s mind to give you the thing that you think you are waiting for, but it is always in God’s mind to give you Himself.

“’The LORD is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.’ The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.” ~ Lamentations 3:24-26

“But as for me, I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.” ~ Micah 7:7

When I realize that I am exactly where God wants me to be, then I can focus on seeking God instead of waiting for my own desires.

Do you feel like you are in a time of waiting? Wait for God – not for your dreams to come true. Maybe someday you will be in that relationship. Maybe someday you will get that degree. Maybe someday you will finally heal. Maybe someday you will make that decision.

And maybe someday you will get your desires and then start waiting for something else. Waiting comes in cycles – you want something, time goes by, you get it, and then you want something else, more time goes by . . .. We can wait our lives away without even realizing it. (And we think we’re spiritual while we’re doing it.)

But is one situation more important than the next? Are seasons of waiting inferior to the seasons that are not? In God’s perspective, each season is necessary and good in its time. The goal of each season is Christlikeness – not waiting for and receiving temporal blessings. We never have to wait to pursue God with our whole hearts.

So what are you waiting for?

“And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you.” ~ Psalm 39:7
